Les Carroz (Altitude: 1120m)

Les Carroz shares the Grand Massif area with Samoëns, Morillon and Flaine – much the best known of these resorts in Britain. You may have passed through the low-rise, chalet-style village on the way up to higher, purpose-built Flaine, and thought it looked an attractive place to stay.

If so, you were right. It’s a relaxed, very French village with good food shops and unpretentious restaurants, and it enjoys a lovely balcony setting beneath wooded slopes. It makes the best base for the excellent and somewhat under-rated Grand Massif area; in bad weather you can ski locally in the woods, and when the sun shines you can set off for the high, open slopes of Flaine (reaching 2480m).

UK firms seem to focus entirely on apartments, but there are also hotels, including two beside the piste at the top of the village.
